FIRST VISIT

The First Visit is often the most important!

When Should My Child First See the Dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Dental Association, and American Academy of Pediatrics all recommend:

By age one or within 6 months of the first tooth

This is not an arbitrary milestone. It is a preventive intervention window where outcomes are significantly better.

Why the Age One Visit Matters (Evidence-Based)

1. Cavities Are More Common Than Most Parents Realize

  • Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease, and over 4x more common than asthma
  • More than 50% of children experience cavities in baby teeth

2. Waiting Increases Risk—Exponentially

  • For every year you delay the first visit, the odds of having cavities at that first visit increase by 2.1x
  • A child seen at age 5 has nearly 20x higher risk of decay compared to a child seen at age one

3. Early Visits Reduce Future Treatment

  • Children seen early are more likely to need only preventive care—not restorative or emergency treatment
  • Delaying care leads to more procedures and higher long-term costs

4. Untreated Dental Disease Has Real Consequences

Untreated cavities can lead to:

  • Pain and difficulty eating
  • Emergency room visits
Missed school and work for parents
  • In rare cases, a serious systemic infection

Dental-related issues account for millions of lost school hours each year.

What Happens at the First Visit?

At Mountain Valley Kids Dental, the first visit is intentionally low-pressure and parent-focused.

You Can Expect:

  • A gentle exam (often done in a parent’s lap)
  • Early cavity detection and risk assessment
  • Preventive treatments when appropriate (such as fluoride varnish)
  • Guidance on:
    o Brushing and oral hygiene
    o Nutrition and cavity prevention
    o Pacifier/thumb habits
    o Injury prevention

This is called anticipatory guidance—and it is one of the most important parts of the visit.

Why Prevention Matters More Than Treatment

Modern pediatric dentistry prioritizes non-invasive, early intervention:

  • Fluoride varnish to strengthen enamel
  • Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) to stop early decay
  • Behavior-first approaches to avoid sedation or surgery

When children are seen early, we can often prevent the need for fillings, sedation, or hospitalbased care entirely.

The Long-Term Advantage of Starting Early

Children who establish a “dental home” by age one:

  • Have lower rates of cavities over time
  • Require less invasive treatment
  • Experience better overall health and quality of life

Early prevention is not just clinically effective—it is also more efficient and less disruptive for families.

A Different Kind of First Visit

At many corporate dental offices, first visits are standardized.

At Mountain Valley Kids Dental, they are relationship-driven.

Dr. Higgins takes the time to:

  • Understand your child’s temperament and needs
  • Build trust gradually
  • Partner directly with parents

This is a slower, more intentional model of care and it produces better long-term outcomes.
